As you know, most of us set goals each New Year, and then by February, we wonder what happened. There are a number of reasons for this, and the biggest one is that we are not committed to the goal, because it would only be nice to have, as opposed to a burning desire that you must achieve.
In order to overcome this lack of commitment, there are a few things you need to do in order to achieve your goals.
The first step is to arrange your goals in four groups. Make only one major goal, and no more than two other minor goals, in each group. These four groups are;
1. Your health — without which most of the others don’t matter
2. Your wealth — which is undeniably important, so treat it as such
3. Your personal self — your hobbies and interests
4. Your social self — your friends, family, and community
Next you need to write the goal down, either on paper or in your computer; but it has to be written down and stored for retrieval. You need to write the goal with these things in mind;
1. What the goal is,
2. Why you want to achieve it,
3. How you are going to achieve it.
You must also keep in mind that all goals need to be SMART goals.
They need to be;
- Singular – only one goal at a time
- Measurable – they need to have numbers in them.
- Achievable – are you totally committed to achieving it
- Realistic – don’t set goals so high that you know you’ll never reach them, but also make them high enough to mean something to you
- Time-related – you must give each goal a specific time-frame in which you will have achieved that goal.
An example of a personal goal may be your golf handicap. Let’s say you are a 15 handicap golfer now, and you want to be a 9 handicap by August 1 2010. That is what your goal is.
You want to achieve it so you can brag to your friends that you are now a single digit handicap golfer, and you then set out a practice and playing regime, starting with indoor practice in the winter, to ensure you achieve it.
You can see that it follows all of the rules set out above, and now you need to set out a weekly time schedule to ensure it happens.
And you should review your goals on a daily basis and adjust them if necessary.
Good luck, and let me know how you are doing, or if you need any help.
